More about the author

All beginnings are difficult: even experienced skiers know this only too well. Especially for kids as beginners, i.e. future winter sports enthusiasts who are on skis for the first time, perfect equipment in the right children's ski length is essential for a good first skiing experience. That's why we at INTERSPORT Rent make no compromises when it comes to children's skis: Every child receives skis optimally adapted to their body size in the ski hire shop. We have answered the most important questions about the recommended ski length for children for you.

What is the ideal ski length for kids?

The ideal length of children's skis is determined on the basis by two main factors:

  • Height of the child
  • Skiing ability on the slopes

For kids who are just learning to ski or making their first turns, we recommend a ski length from the ground to the chest. This ensures that young skiers have good control of the skis and can make turns more easily.

Especially for children, their skiing ability is an important factor in addition to height. For young skiers with some experience, the ski can reach up to their mouth or nose. And if your child is a little racer, eye level is the right choice. Here again at a glance:

  • Beginner: Ski reaches up to the chest
  • Advanced: Ski may reach up to the mouth or nose
  • Little racers: Ski at eye level

Important: The best companion for fun on the slopes is a well-fitting ski helmet, even for the little ones! You can find tips on the right size in our RENTertainer blog article about children's ski helmets.

Basic ski size chart for the right ski length for kids

The following table will help you to quickly determine the right ski size for children according to their ability:

Ability Ski length
True beginner Height minus 40 cm
Beginner Height minus 35 cm
Intermediate Height minus 30 cm
Advanced  Height minus 15 cm
Pro Height minus 5 cm

Rule of thumb: shorter skis are usually best for children because they are easier to learn on!

Skis that are too long are an absolute no-go for children. Beginners have a much harder time with equipment that is too big - and that affects not only their ability, but more importantly, their enjoyment of skiing!

How to determine the right ski length for your kids

In just two simple steps, you can find the perfect ski size for your child and ensure maximum skiing fun and faster learning success on the slopes.

  1. Measure & weigh: Determine your child's current height and weight.
  2. Find your child's measurements in the size chart below. Voilá: You have found the right children's ski size.

Note the size chart for children's ski lengths:

  • If you are not sure and/or the size is between two values, the weight is a good guide.
  • If your child is lighter for their size, choose the shorter skis.
  • If your child is heavier for their size, choose the longer model.

Which ski length for which age: from toddler to teenager

Sounds logical, and it is: the younger the child, the shorter the ski! So go for short carvers for little kids! You'll soon see the results. However, short skis aren’t a permanent solution - especially not when the toddlers have outgrown the ski school.

Even if you are used to skis that are too short, it is usually easy to switch to longer models because they are known to offer more stability and smoothness.

As the children get older, the skis should also get longer. The following applies to ski length for kids:

  • Toddlers: Significantly shorter skis for easier learning.
  • Children over 120 cm tall: The length of the children's skis can reach their height if they are good skiers.
  • From 160 cm height and 55 kg: Switch to adult skis possible.

Ski length for kids: Decision support

Short skis are ideal when ...

  • the child has a rather delicate build and weighs less than his or her ideal weight.
  • the child has never skied before.
  • the child rides very carefully.
  • the child often makes quick, short turns.
  • the child still has difficulty making turns.

Longer skis are ideal when ...

  • the child's weight is above the ideal weight.
  • the child is already a very good skier.
  • the child enjoys going fast.

The complete ski equipment for children: the right accessories

In addition to the right ski length, children also need other suitable ski equipment. Suitable bindings and well-fitting ski boots are an absolute must for the first turns! Just as important is a high-quality helmet to protect against injuries. The right winter clothing with a waterproof ski jacket, ski trousers and warm gloves also contribute to well-being. For more advanced kids, age-appropriate ski poles and suitable ski goggles can complete the equipment.

Always make sure you choose the right size and quality - this is the only way to make skiing fun for your child right from the start! Use the rental options from INTERSPORT Rent. We guarantee you perfectly maintained ski equipment from top brands in the perfect size.

Frequently asked questions about the right ski length for kids:

Are short skis easier to ride?

Yes, shorter skis are definitely easier for kids to control. They are more maneuverable, more agile, and more forgiving of mistakes. Especially for beginners and lighter children, short skis make it much easier to learn basic techniques. The lighter weight also means faster progress because kids don’t get tired that quickly.

Until when should you use children's or junior skis?

Youth skis are generally suitable up to a height of about 160 cm and a weight of about 55 kg, at which point the switch to adult models should take place. However, it is not only the size that matters, but also the ability and skiing style of the young person. Athletic skiers often move up to adult skis sooner because they offer more performance. If you are unsure, getting some expert advice from an INTERSPORT Rent Shop is recommended.

When should you buy new skis?

New children's skis are the way to go in the following situations

  • When the current skis have become too short (guideline: more than 15 cm below the recommended value).
  • If there is a significant improvement in their skiing ability (going from beginner to advanced)
  • When the skis show visible damage or significant wear and tear
  • After 2-3 intensive ski seasons, when the material tires out.

As an alternative to buying renting ski equipment is a great option for kids because they grow and develop their skiing style quickly. This means you always have the right equipment – from skis to bindings, poles and helmet - in the right size for kids.

INTERSPORT Rent Tip:

The rental shops across Europe will give you the best advice if you're looking for equipment for your little ones!

Take advantage of our extensive rental program designed specifically for children: You will always get the right size skis - even if your child grows during the season, we will exchange the equipment free of charge. This means your child will always have the best equipment and you will save money compared to buying a complete set of equipment that they will outgrow anyway.
