The best ski goggle care tips

It's a glorious day and you're ready to hit the slopes. But before you set off, you realise: Your vision is full of spots. Instead of enjoying your turns in the snow at, you have to clean your ski google first.

Does that sound familiar? Then you also know that dirty lenses are one of the most annoying things about skiing or snowboarding.

But how do you actually clean a goggle properly? Together with ATOMIC, INTERSPORT Rent has put together the best tips for the correct care of ski goggles, so that you can enjoy your days in the snow.

How to clean ski goggles – just like sunglasses?

Unfortunately, not. High-quality products like models such as Revent L HD Photo or the Four Q HD from ATOMIC are much more sensitive than sunglasses. The flexible lens and the anti-fog coating on the inside increase their care needs. Incorrect use can destroy this coating – and therefore the function of the goggles.

The best choice is the original cleaning cloth from the manufacturer, which you received when you purchased your goggle. Alternatively, you can also use a high-quality microfiber cloth. Stay away from T-shirts, towels or paper handkerchiefs, as they can easily become fluffy or even scratch the lens.

And very important: Only use clean water for ski goggles! Household cleaners or chemical additives can the damage them.

Have you lost your cleaning cloth? Better get a new, suitable cloth before you ruin your goggles with a handkerchief or similar. Our winter sports experts have the right gear for you - simply visit one of our over 800 INTERSPORT Rent shops.

How do I clean my ski goggle properly?

The care of your ski goggles is not rocket science. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Never wipe over wet lenses! The anti-reflective coating could be damaged, and the lens scratched. So shake your goggles thoroughly first to remove as much snow and ice as possible.
  • If your glasses are iced up, warm them up under your jacket first. This will dissolve the ice gently.
  • If your glasses are still wet after shaking them vigorously, dab them dry with the cleaning cloth or a soft microfiber cloth. Do not wipe, as this may rub additional dirt onto the lens.
  • Only clean the outside of the lens! The inside of your ski goggles is super-sensitive and easy to damage.
  • If it is absolutely necessary to clean the inner lens: Use warm water only and dab carefully.
  • Ensure that it dries completely in the open air after use.

Extra tips on how to care for your anti-fog coating

The anti-fog coating is a sensitive protective layer that prevents your ski goggles from fogging up when you are out in the snow. It consists of a special surface treatment that minimises condensation. To keep this protective layer permanently intact, you should:

  • Avoid rubbing the inside of the lens dry – even with a microfiber cloth.
  • Do not use aggressive detergents which you find at home.
  • Always allow the goggles to dry after a day's in the snow to avoid moisture damage.
  • Never expose the goggles to direct heat, as high temperatures can destroy their function.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do if the inside of a goggle is damaged. If the damage is minimal, you can try an anti-itch spray. However, this is probably a short-term solution. If the spray doesn't help, you will probably need to think about replacing the lens – or buying new ski goggles.

The best thing to do with damaged ski goggles is to take them to one of our INTERSPORT Rent shops. We will be happy to advise you on your options.

Clean your ski goggles: foam and headband care

It's not just the lenses of your goggles that need special care – the foam and headband also deserve attention:

  • Clean the foam: Rinse lightly with lukewarm, mild soapy water and air dry. This will remove perspiration and extends the life of the foam.
  • Washing the headband: Sweat and salt can cause the headband to become brittle. Therefore, clean it regularly with lukewarm, mild soapy water.

More tips to clean your ski goggles

Proper care not only prolongs the life of your goggles, it also keeps your vision clear. Here are some extra care tips that can make all the difference:

  • Never store them in extreme cold or heat! This also means: Do not leave them in the car overnight!
  • Make sure they are completely dry before packing them away! If you pack them away wet, this will encourage the growth of mould and has a negative effect on the service life and performance of the product.
  • If you put cold ski goggles on your face, they will steam up easily. Warm them up first!

Proper cleaning is more than just cleaning. It's about protecting the sensitive coating, avoiding scratches and preserving the foam and headband. With the right methods, your ski goggles will stay in top condition for a long time – for clear vision and many perfect days of skiing.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning ski goggles

Can the foam on ski goggles be cleaned?

Yes, the foam can be carefully wiped off with lukewarm water and a small amount of a mild liquid detergent. Please do not use an abrasive cloth and then allow to air dry completely to prevent mould growth.

Can you clean the inside of ski goggles?

The inside of the goggles should only be cleaned if absolutely necessary with warm water and a gentle dabbing motion. Vigorous rubbing will destroy the coating and therefore the function of the ski goggles.
