Skiing in Tignes – Exploring the Espace Killy ski area

The Espace Killy ski area and the ski resorts of Tignes and Val d’Isère offer a varied mix of slopes for all ability levels. Thanks to its high-altitude location around three-thousand-metre summits such as the 3,656-metre-high Grande Motte, the area boasts excellent snow conditions and an extra-long season.

The sporty slopes of Tignes are located at altitudes between 1,550 and 3,456 metres above sea level. This results in particularly long descents and impressive altitude differences. It’s perfect for those who love to ski from morning until evening.

Enjoy the Espace Killy ski area

Tignes is one of France’s most famous ski resorts. It combines traditional Savoyard charm with a modern, international atmosphere. The ski resort is known for its excellent snow conditions at 2,100 metres above sea level and at Grande Motte glacier between September and May.

Tignes is Europe’s second-highest ski resort and a great winter sport destination nestled in the breathtaking high-altitude landscapes of the Vanoise massif. Together with equally famous Val d’Isère, Tignes is part of the interconnected ski area of Espace Killy. It regularly hosts major sporting events and is a hotspot for freestylers. What’s more, the resort at Grande Motte glacier is also popular with freeriders looking for off-piste happiness.

Extra event tip: Every year in March, the Winter X Games Europe take place in Tignes. The spectacular event sees the world’s best winter extreme athletes competing in various disciplines.

Slope difficulty level to choose the right rental equipment

Tignes boasts a perfect balance of slopes for all skill levels across its diverse terrain, from the gentle green slopes around Val Claret and Le Lac ideal for beginners to well-groomed blue runs including the famous 10 km descent from Grande Motte glacier.

For those seeking more challenge, the resort offers intermediate red slopes with steeper sections perfect for technique improvement, while experts can test their skills on demanding black runs like the legendary "La Sache" with its impressive 1,400 m vertical drop from Aiguille Percée to Les Brévières.

This exceptional variety ensures that every skier and snowboarder will find perfectly matched runs regardless of their ability level throughout the entire resort.

The Grande Motte glacier transforms Tignes into one of Europe's few genuine summer skiing destinations, offering enthusiasts the rare opportunity to carve turns also under the summer sun from June to August.

Our RENTertainers recommend

Grande Motte is waiting for you! A spectacular ride with the state-of-the-art “Funiculaire Grande Motte” underground cableway takes you up to Tignes’ landmark glacier, which is also the region’s highest mountain summit. Up on the glacier, a choice of one-of-a-kind descents is waiting for you in this wonderful resort.

For instance, one of the world’s longest blue slopes winds its way over several kilometres past the glacier to Val Claret. The slope is also suitable for beginners. Advanced skiers and snowboarders will enjoy the red slope, which covers a whopping altitude difference of 1,400 metres on its way down to the valley.
