Alpe d’Huez: the ski resort with guaranteed sunshine

The state-of-the-art cable cars and lifts of the Alpe d’Huez ski resort transport winter sports enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels up to the peak of the Pic Blanc at 3,300 metres. Due to its southern location, the ski resort is also known as “L’Ile au Soleil” – the island of the sun – and it definitely lives up to its nickname with delightful sunny glacier descents above the tree line. If you have a soft spot for this kind of terrain, Alpe d’Huez is just the place for you!

Winter sports above the tree line

Thanks to its connection to five other winter sports resorts (Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany, and Villard-Reculas), you benefit from an excellent skiing infrastructure on site. Beyond the slopes, a diverse range of leisure activities is waiting for you, including skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

From December to April, you can partake in these activities on impeccably groomed ski runs, trails and cross-country ski trails, all while enjoying the unparalleled mountain panorama of the Grand Rousses.

Whether you’re into freestyle skiing, freeriding or practising your first turns on easy blue ski runs: Alpe d’Huez offers a diverse range of slopes – the perfect mix for snow enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels! Beginners often head closer towards the valley where the slopes flatten out considerably and are a little more forgiving – ideal for some practice after completing a ski course.

Two dedicated zones with easy slopes are reserved exclusively for beginners, allowing you to focus on your progress. For those in search of a bit more thrill and excitement, two snow parks offer ample opportunities to work on perfecting your jumps and tricks.

Beyond the enchanting snowshoeing trails, cross-country ski trails and magical ice skating rinks, the winter sports resort also boasts a few very unique off-slope highlights, such as skijoring. This sport involves being pulled through the picturesque winter landscape on skis by a horse – a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

INTERSPORT Rent tip

Our RENTertainers recommend

The “Sarenne” downhill run. The “Sarenne” stands out as the ultimate highlight for seasoned skiing enthusiasts visiting the Alpe d’Huez ski resort. The longest black descent in the Alps spans a remarkable 16 kilometres, leading you from the summit of Pic Blanc down to the valley. However, the decision to embark on this adventure should be carefully considered, as there are no opportunities to turn back along the route. Instead, you’ll swoosh down into the valley surrounded by stunning mountain scenery – and cover an impressive elevation loss of 1,730 metres along the way.

High-quality winter sports equipment is crucial for this thrilling descent. Have our RENTertainers advise you at your nearest INTERSPORT Rent shop – they’ll help you pick the perfect gear!
